Following the death of the parents of Jonathan's four-year-old nephew Joshua, Dick and his partner find themselves in a new role parents. As if fatherhood didn't bring enough of a set of challenges, the mother of one of Joshua's new friends is murdered, sending Dick on a trail to find out who killed her and why. With a list of suspects ranging from a lesbian ex-partner to the boy's race-car-driver father, Dick is soon embroiled in a case so complicated that child-rearing begins to look easier than solving the case.

I enjoy the character very much and although the previous books were enjoyable their conclusions were too easy to pick out. Again, good stories. This one had so much going on, it’s a cliche but I truly laughed and cried. The ending was a good twist that left you guessing. Well worth the read.

Okay. I....cried.
And....if I had to rate this novel with Kleenex boxes, I would give it 5.

This is the ninth novel of the Dick Hardesty Mystery Series in which Dick, the private investigator, and his lover Jonathan Quinlan have agreed to look after Joshua, Jonathan's 4 year old nephew, who has come to stay with them because Joshua's parents have been given a wonderful chance to go visit Hawaii (!) and stay there for some time.

Well, after having solved some minor cases, Dick has stumbled upon a bigger case in which Carlene, the mother of four year old Kelly who has become good friends with Joshua at Day Care School, gets killed in a car accident which strongly reminds Dick that it was NOT an accident.

Eventually, the case Dick has been working on starts to get life-threatening to Dick, Jonathan, and Joshua. Then the whole thing becomes personal to Dick....

So....our Dick decides to set a trap to track down the suspect before any harm comes to his now beloved family - Jonathan, Joshua, and....himself.

Now....the reason why you need 5(!?) Kleenex boxes to read this novel is - because there are scenes where the people who are very, very close to the central characters tragically die. Plus....without tears, nobody can read the parts where Dick and Jonathan's friends try to do "something" to give them help and comfort - in order to show them their unconditional friendship and love.

Oh, by the way....in this story, our Dick's talking(?) crotch makes a few ( brief ) appearances when Dick is ogling handsome men without letting anyone ( except Jonathan ) notice. ( Jonathan keeps an eye on him pretty good. )

Well....at first, it may be a little awkward to have Joshua around in the Dick and Jonathan's house ( and maybe, even for readers ), we will soon realise they are now one, big, happy family that cannot be parted or broken even in a crisis ! D

The funny thing that happens in this volume is....at the very end of this whole story, Craig, the son of Lieutenant Mark Richman ( gay-friendly, Dick-friendly police officer ), falls madly in love with this beautiful, innocent, Jonathan ! XD

With an angelic face and smile, plus a pure, sincere heart like that, Jonathan will attract any men and women, kids and grown-ups, the young and the old, in this whole wide world, literally !!

Thank you so much Dorien Grey-san for writing all these series !
Now The Good Cop (#5) and The Popsicle Tree (#9) have become my MOST favourite novels from the Dick Hardesty Series because these two are the very stories where Jonathan and Joshua show up for the very first time in which Dick's life has been changed greatly !
Good quality. Fast service
Good read excellent mystery great author
If you are into murder mysteries, you HAVE to read these excellent books. I was hooked from the first chapter. Dorien Grey's characters have depth, humor, and LOTS of sex appeal!! Whether you are gay or straight, these are a fantastic read!!!!!
I have been addicted to the Dick Hardesty series from the first page of the first book. I have purchased all of the series and have truly enjoyed every page...until now.
I am so disappointed in the direction the author is taking his characters. He has, in my opinion, turned this amazing, cutting edge mystery series into a gay cozy mystery. And as with all of the cozies I have read, the character turns into an addle brained bunch of mush...to me, this is what is happening to Dick. He now is a "family man", and though he knows he has obligations to his family, he still jumps right out there to put himself in situations he shouldn't be in. I fear that in future volumes we will lose touch with all of the colorful and interesting characters that are part of Jonathon and Dicks lives. By nature, they will have less and less in common with these characters, and they will fade into the background.
This book is very well written, and the characters are well done, but this direction is just not for me. I will not be reading the rest of the series. This saddens me, but I will not waste my time reading novels that leave me annoyed and unsatisfied.
Fortunately, I have just discovered Josh Lanyon's Adrien English series so my evenings are once again spent with characters I can enjoy and feel good about "knowing".
I'm sorry Mr. Grey, but our relationship has ended.
I was given The Popsicle Tree as a gift, although the fact that I like posicles has nothing to do with the story! That fortuitous serendipity introduced me to the Dick Hardesty series. What a treat - a well plotted mystery, a whodunit with enough clues to keep you guessing, interwoven with what at first seem to be extraneous story lines which comment upon and give greater depth to the main plot line. Solid characters, not stock figures. Most importantly, the main character - the author's voice - is more than likeable, and is allowed to grow. And tells the story as if he's a good friend, just catching yo up on old times. Now I have to start at the beginning of the series (I already have.)
I enjoy the character very much and although the previous books were enjoyable their conclusions were too easy to pick out. Again, good stories. This one had so much going on, it’s a cliche but I truly laughed and cried. The ending was a good twist that left you guessing. Well worth the read.
