How Not to Buy a Cruising Boat TJ Akey Deb Akey 9781511997942 Books

My husband and I are in the process of looking for our forever live aboard sailboat. Our goal is to purchase the boat by the end of this year, live aboard her for the next two years until my husband retires and then sail off into the sunset...metaphorically. I have learned so much from reading your book! It is well written, easy to read and understand, witty and extremely informative. I especially like the chapters Maintenance in Paradise and Part and Parcel. I highly recommend the paperback version over the kindle version so you can underline and take notes which I have done a lot of! And I love all your tips in each chapter!! It truly is the "bible" for boat shopping. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

How Not to Buy a Cruising Boat TJ Akey Deb Akey 9781511997942 Books Reviews

I knew the authors from their time 'before boat' and then 'after boat.' Without a doubt it had its ups and downs. I learned so much from speaking to them and this book is a true account of the transition from land to sea. I now have a trusted reference from persons who laid it all out for review and reflection. Safe sailing, or not, either is cool as long as you figure it out early enough.
This was the best little book packed with so much information. I was very surprised how the two people that wrote the book. Told how not to buy the first or 20th boat your looking at. They told about all the mistakes they had made. For the price anyone looking to buy a boat this is a must read.
Confirmed my suspicions about dishonesty in yacht resale market, including surveyors. Fantastic advice on evaluating a boat, e.g., having motor and transmission oils sent to independent lab for analysis. Also insightful discussion about types of cruisers (i.e., people) in the cruising population. A lot of invaluable 20/20 hindsight regarding ongoing maintenance and budgets is shared as well.

Definitely gave me a lot more to think about - pre and post boat purchase.
As I finished this read, I realized the exquisite nature of the book. A perfect harmony, the yin and the yang, brought to balance in these pages.
A dissertation on the pros and cons of various toilets followed by a perfect essay on aging and the respect due those who pass before us. A captivating tale of two folks with a half-assed idea that was more dream than plan, but told with the intention of giving a hand up to those with the same dream. A wealth of practical information for those, like my wife and I, who hope go to sea and stay. All these things, brought together and tied with a bow of perfectly formed expression, humility and wit. Thank you, Deb and Tim, for such a fine read.
Appreciate the authors sharing their experiences. Think I learned you can be just as screwed fixing up an old classic with Bluewater abilities as I buying a 12 year old production boat. The book allowed me to think and contemplate the pitfalls of purchasing a boat. After reading I made a personal choice to scale back the size of my boat purchase and to negotiate with a small sailboat builder for a new quality sailboat. Authors shared how they enjoyed their Com-Pac 35 before trading up. A Com-Pac 23 Pilothouse is my future. This book was an integral part in my decision making. Highly recommend before buying a sailboat to read this book.
I've read the book twice (I bought the kindle edition) ~ after a few unsettling and overwhelming forays with two brokers earlier in the year, I finally bought the book thinking surely a little comic relief might refresh my courage to move forward. I was under the impression the book was going to be a light and funny tale of happy and not so happy mishaps on the journey to becoming full-time cruisers all with a happy sunset filled ending - and it's that, but so much more. Both authors are great writers who not only tell of their journey and experiences but what they learned from them - and then they share detailed and useful information of what we should do to avoid certain missteps on our own paths. I've amassed a lot of lists and spreadsheets and lists and self-examins and books and notes and lists over the past year researching what boat will best suit my needs, goals and abilities but this book has helped me re-organize and regroup my approach. It's hard to do this as a single woman but I consider this book an invaluable resource and confidence builder that while it may be against my better judgement, moving forward and buying a boat is an "affliction with no cure" and I can, and will move forward. It's a great resource.
Excellently written with the most honest and least fluffy wording. No rose covered glasses here. The author goes step by step through his process of purchasing a "dream boat" to sail the world in. The reality of his story is most likely a very common reality for most used boat buyers. When you purchase a 25 or 30 year old boat your going to have lots of "fixing" to do. The cost of fixing a blue water boat to sail the ocean is truly unknown.
I have researched for many years what others are saying and experiencing in purchasing a used sailboat. This is the first book I have read that covers most if not all the systems of a sailboat and what can and did go wrong for this couple.
I highly recommend this book for anyone about to purchase a used sailboat, as we almost did. We have been powerboats for years and were going to make the change to sail. The boat we fell in love with turned out to be very much like the authors boat but fortunately, we did not write the check.
